Autism Society of SWLA

Founded in the 1970’s by Geri Christ Landry, we are an affiliate in good standing with the Autism Society of America. We provide support, services and opportunities to persons with autism and their families in the following parishes: Calcasieu, Cameron, Beauregard, Jeff Davis, Allen and Vernon.

Support meetings are held the first Thursday of each month, September through May in Lake Charles. In addition, we have an extensive lending library with the latest books and DVD’s available for individuals to check out at their leisure. We provide advocacy in schools as well as conferences and workshops.

We strive to give individuals with autism & their families the opportunity to enjoy many events in the community throughout the year. Events include: Fall picnic, Christmas party, Children’s Museum visits, SPAR water park event, an annual summer camp “Camp Hopen” and “Brighter, Quieter” movie screenings on a quarterly basis. Held at Cinemark Theater at the Prien Lake Mall, the theater lights are left on, the volume turned down and the “Silence is Golden” rule is lifted so that the entire family can enjoy a movie together!

A 501(C)(3) organization, we rely solely on fundraising and donations. The 2 main fundraisers are an annual golf tournament, “Tee off 4 Autism” held in the fall, and collecting, sorting and selling of Mardi Gras Beads throughout the year.

Every April; we partner with 2 local organizations: Autism Services of SWLA and The St. Nicholas Center, to host a 1 mile Autism Awareness walk “Joining Hands for Autism”.

With all of these social events and fundraisers throughout the year, we need help! We always encourage & welcome members to become involved in the planning, executing and participating stages of all events/fundraisers that we host!

Local membership is free. Monthly newsletters are delivered via email.
